Root

A forest at war, four completely asymmetrical bills. The Cat Marquises build factories, the Eagle Nests fly from tree to tree, the Forest Alliance organizes revolt, and the Wanderers make their own plans. No faction plays the same — not even from game to game.

Setup

Deploy the forest board in the center

Each player chooses a faction and takes their board and clothing

Place each player's marker on "0" on the scoring track

Shuffle the shared deck of 54 cards and deal 3 cards to each player

Place the 4 ruins on the spaces marked "R" on the map

Place the 12 objects in their corresponding spaces on the map

Each faction does their specific preparation in this order: Marchioness → Eyrie Dynasty → Forest Alliance → Wanderer

Rules

  • Each player takes their full turn in three phases, in order:

  • Alba (Birdsong): automatic effects and initial actions of the faction

  • Day (Daylight): the main phase, where most actions are performed

  • Evening: Scoring, Card Draw, and Final Effects

  • The details of each phase are on the board of each faction.

Victory conditions

  • Each faction scores differently during the game, not just at the end. The first player to reach 30 points wins immediately, even half a turn away from another player. Alternatively, a player can activate a Domination card to win with a special condition instead of points
